Q: What is "Real-Time
Radar"?
A: All of
AccuWeather's Local radar imagery (and in fact that of all weather companies on
the Internet) comes from NEXRAD WSR-88D Radars, owned and operated by the
National Weather Service, the Department of Defense, and the Federal Aviation
Administration.
These
Local "single-site" Radars update every 5, 6, or 10 minutes, depending on which
mode the radar's operator selects. Normally 10 minutes is used in times with no
precipitation, 6 is used during precipitation, and 5 is used during severe or
extreme precipitation events. It is not possible for any commercial weather
provider to update these images any sooner.
AccuWeather
displays these Local Radars on AccuWeather.com as soon as the raw data is
transmitted over the phone lines to us and we create the image. Normally the
delay between the remote radar capturing the image and AccuWeather displaying
it is negligible. Images are immediately looped. The AccuWeather.com Premium
service features more than 20 different types of these local radars, while our
Free service only displays three.
The time
stamped on the Local Radar image comes from the radar site - if the radar
site's clock is not correct then the image may seem to be slightly older or
newer than the current time. The time is displayed in "Z" time. For more
information on interpreting "Z" time,

here.
AccuWeather
also creates radar mosaics (state, regional, and national) which take in to
account information from all the radars in the United States. This imagery is
updated from raw data every 15 minutes (every 5 minutes on the Premium site!) and delivered to AccuWeather.com as soon
as the image is ready. Images are immediately looped.
