Honor Recognizes AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist's Industry Contributions on Groundhog Day
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. February 2, 2011 - AccuWeather.com, the world's leading multimedia weather information source, today announces the induction of its own Chief Meteorologist and Senior Vice President, Elliot Abrams, into The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center's National Meteorologist Hall of Fame. Elliot was inducted today during the Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney, Pa. where Punxsutawney Phil forecasted his annual winter weather prediction.
"The Weather Discovery Center is very proud to have Elliot Abrams as a new member of the Meteorologist Hall of Fame," said Mary Jean Johnston, Project Administrator for the Center. "Elliot is so well-known throughout Pennsylvania and beyond for numerous contributions in his field. He is a wonderful example to aspiring meteorologists."
Elliot joined AccuWeather as a meteorologist in 1967 and co-founded AccuWeather's radio service in 1971. Today, he is an AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist and Senior Vice President. He is also co-author of the college text "Meteorology," published by McGraw-Hill, and co-author of AccuWeather's award-winning On-Line With AccuWeather™ instructional program for junior and senior high school classes.
Elliot is one of only a few people who have earned the accredited status of Certified Consulting Meteorologist and the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Seals of Approval for both radio and television.
His interest in weather started at the age of five when his father, a research chemist, built a barometer for him. Elliot was a weatherman in his second grade class play and was later blamed for rainy weekends in the fourth grade. He earned a B.S. and an M.S. in Meteorology from the Pennsylvania State University and, in college, Elliot was a charter member of The Chi Epsilon Pi Meteorology Honorary Society. He is also a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Officer Training School.
In addition to today's Hall of Fame honor, Elliot earned the 1993 AMS Award for Outstanding Service by a Broadcast Meteorologist "for his decades of significant contributions to radio weather broadcasting and to weather education at all levels," and following this award, the 1994 AMS Charles Mitchell Award for "outstanding and unique dissemination of weather forecasts to the nation's public by radio and television." In 1996, he was named "Broadcaster of the Year" by The National Weather Association. And, in 2009, Elliot was inducted into The Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.
The first inductee into the National Meteorologist Hall of Fame was AccuWeather Founder and President, Dr. Joel N. Myers. Dr. Myers was inducted in 2007.
