STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - June 16, 2008 - AccuWeather® Chief Executive Officer Barry L. Myers presented the Bellefonte Area Middle School and its students with a plaque in recognition of their outstanding work in raising $22,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation®.
"When I was at the 2008 AccuWeather.com Make-A-Wish Gala in April and saw your fundraising team leaders step up and present a check for $22,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, I was truly amazed," stated Myers. "I leaned over to my wife and said, "We should do something to recognize what these kids have accomplished." Myers presented the plaque on behalf of AccuWeather.com at the school's end of year assembly. The school's four officers accepted the plaque on behalf of the student body at the assembly with the entire school, grades 6 through 8, in attendance.
The students conducted two major fundraisers in 2008, for which pledges were obtained: the Day of Caring Walk-a-Thon and an All-Night Dance. Student Council Advisor Michael Stone noted that this year's 8th-grade class, which will be moving on to high school, raised $47,000 over their three years at the middle school: $22,000 in 2008, $15,000 as 7th-graders in 2007, and $10,000 as 6th-graders in 2006.
Last Friday, Myers left the students with words of thanks and admiration for their work to grant wishes to kids who are fighting major illnesses. "You inspired others to participate in an important cause. You inspired others to donate to that cause. You made happier the lives of others less fortunate," he declared. "Your real accomplishment is more than participation, donations and happiness; it is the inspiration of others - and a lesson for us all."
Myers, who was accompanied by AccuWeather Human Resources staff member and Bellefonte Area Middle School alumnus Tyler Ishler, was particularly impressed with the significant contribution made by the school's youth. "Your efforts touched my heart and that of many others," Myers said. "You could have spent your time in many other activities, or just texting your friends, but you chose to help others." In conclusion, Myers remarked, "A middle school student can make a difference in the world - you have proven that; you have made a great difference. Be proud of what you have done, and may many others follow in your footsteps."
