State College, PA, August 22, 2013 - The Little League World Series has ramped up safety and security this year, by utilizing an application developed by AccuWeather, the world's leading multimedia weather information source, and Esri, the leading GIS mapping software development company. The web app provides a common operating picture (COP) should severe weather play a role in this year's tournament to ensure the safety of all involved with the highly attended event.
The interactive mapping system uses Esri-enabled technology to help the Little League World Series mitigate the risks of severe weather to their operations throughout the series. Translated into visually compelling animations and illustrations, this application integrates the league's assets with all manner of weather. This includes current conditions, forecasts and severe weather warnings including lightning, rainfall, winds, extreme temperatures, and tornados.
By receiving advanced warning of high impact weather events, the league can safely shelter players, spectators and employees and put emergency protocols into action. Site-specific warnings can also alert key personnel when weather is in the vicinity of the ball fields, but will not directly impact them - limiting unnecessary downtime and interruptions of the games.
This application also features an updated interface, taking advantage of the latest Esri Flex technology, which allows for enhanced interactivity and ease of use. The Message Center now displays more details about each warning, including severity indicator and hover-over warning functionality to view full details. It also includes a ticker; indicating last update time, number of active warnings, and next expire time for constant update of warnings situation.
Because seconds count when severe weather hits, AccuWeather supplied the league with 100 licenses to access this application through mobile devices, ensuring a swift response by delivering site-specific severe weather warnings directly into the hands of the end user - all combined with the quick and direct access to the league's standard operating procedures for weather-specific emergencies.
The Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., began Thursday, August 16th, and will continue through with the Championship game on Sunday, August 25th.
