Nine students from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., took a different approach to Spring Break this year: helping to aid the victims of Superstorm Sandy.
The students were paired with families and individuals on the New Jersey coast that had severe damage to their homes and helped them with various tasks such as installing insulation, laying down flooring and disposing of debris.
The project culminated in a large gathering at Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church where students prepared a meal for the families they had spent the week working alongside.
"I really think the people that we met were the most inspiring aspect of our trip," Appalachian State Graduate student, Brian Holcomb said.
"The common refrain that we heard when we were down here is that people said, 'Oh, someone had it off worse than me.' So everyone, no matter how much they were affected, were looking toward other people to help.'"
