A mild surge will build eastward across the nation during this week.

Warming, buoyed by sunshine, will begin in earnest along the Rockies to the western Plains on Tuesday and Wednesday. At this time, temperatures of 65° to 70° will occur northward into Montana and the western Dakotas.

Meanwhile, a return to plentiful sunshine in the Midwest and Northeast at midweek will bring growing eastward momentum to the warm-up. This will culminate on Friday with highs of at least 60°, and potentially a good deal more, from Chicago to New York.

For perspective, it might help to know that the normal high temperature during the week reaches the upper 40s in Chicago and the lower 50s in New York.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
