The weather pattern across the United States will undergo a significant change later this week. Unseasonably warm air over the Southwestern states will spread into the Plains by the middle of the week, then reach the Northeast toward the end of the week.

Afternoon temperatures could reach 70 degrees over parts of the interior Northeast by Saturday.

At the same time, much colder air and snow will spread southward through the eastern Rockies and High Plains. This colder air will eventually spread into the eastern United States the following week.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
