A surfing contest in San Diego featured some unique competitors on Sunday, as swells and rip currents were tamer than the past few weeks.

Returning for its ninth year, the Petco Surf Dog Competition hit the waves to raise money for the local chapter of the humane society.

According to event volunteer Evan Harding, the contest featured a range of breed sizes, as well as some tandem dog surfers.

More than 50 pups took part in the event. A panel of judges determined the winner of the grand prize - a $250 Petco giftcard.

Swells were gentler on Sunday, following some off-and-on dangerous rip currents along the coast of California over the past few weeks. Swells are expected to stay in the 1- to 2-foot range for most of the week.
