Hurricane Rina to Keep Strengthening over Caribbean

A satellite picture of Rina from early Monday morning.

After becoming a hurricane in the western Caribbean near Central America early Monday, Rina is predicted to continue intensifying over the next few days.

The main concern for the storm will remain the potential for excessive rainfall and mudslides in Central America, especially in the mountainous terrain of Honduras.

The additional strengthening of Rina is expected as the storm brews over very warm water of the western Caribbean. The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center has the latest stats on Rina.

For the short term, a track toward the west-northwest is likely, keeping Rina's center north of Honduras. The tropical storm will still lash the coast of the nation with tropical storm-force winds and battering surf on top of the excessive rainfall.

As the week progresses, it may become more influenced by upper-level winds in the area, and an upper-level trough that will push eastward across North America. This would tend to pull the storm northward. The main question here will be how close the storm gets to the Yucatan Peninsula before turning northward.

An earlier turn could spare Belize and Mexico from the worst of the winds and rain. A later turn would mean those areas will feel the brunt of the storm and perhaps a prolonged period of extreme rains.

In the long term, some computer model guidance hints that a track toward Cuba or Florida is possible.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
