Central, Coastal Texas Threatened by Hermine Today
Hermine made landfall around 8:30 p.m. CDT on Monday evening along the coast of northeastern Mexico, about 40 miles south of Brownsville, Texas.
A lack of wind shear (strong winds high in the atmosphere) and the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico allowed Hermine to strengthen into a strong tropical storm on Monday.
The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center gives the latest statistics on Tropical Storm Hermine's maximum-sustained winds and its latest position.
Drenching rain will spread over central and coastal Texas om Tuesday as Hermine moves north-northwestward across the state. Flooding from the rain will prove to be the most widespread danger of Hermine, even after the storm loses its tropical storm status.
Tropical storm-force winds buffeted southern Texas on Monday evening and will continue into Tuesday.
The strong winds have downed trees, cut power and torn roofs off across portions of southern Texas.
Additional damage will ensue if Hermine spawns an isolated tornado or two on Tuesday. The greatest threat for tornadoes will lie from the south-central Texas coast, mainly north of Corpus Christi, to the Texas/Louisiana border.
Seas over the western Gulf of Mexico will be dangerously rough for small craft on Tuesday. A storm surge of 1 to 3 feet occurred to the north of Hermine's landfall on Monday evening, causing water to wash onto some low-lying coastal roads in South Texas.
Interaction with land will force Hermine to weaken into a tropical rainstorm by Tuesday night.
While damaging winds will then no longer be an issue, flooding will remain a serious concern as Hermine spreads heavy rain northward across central and eventually northern Texas into Wednesday.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures.
