The stage is set for a round of destructive thunderstorms to fire over the northern Plains this afternoon, bringing a threat for damaging winds, hail and even a few isolated tornadoes to many.

A potent storm tracking through the Canadian Prairies will spark this latest round of severe weather.

This storm will interact with a warm and humid air mass which is already in place, setting the stage for ideal thunderstorm development.

Today is already starting with strong thunderstorms rumbling across northwestern Minnesota into neighboring parts of Canada.

These storms will weaken later this morning, but they will leave behind leftover "boundaries" for which other storms will fire upon later in the afternoon.

With strong heating ahead of this storm system, it won't take much to get a new round of storms to fire over Minnesota, Iowa, western Wisconsin, and northern Missouri.

Cities which will have to keep an eye to the sky today include Minneapolis, Minn., La Crosse, Wisc., Des Moines, Ia., and Eau Claire, Wisc.

The timing of these storms won't be good for those attending events and performing outdoor activities.

In fact, tens of thousands of fans will be at Target Field in Minneapolis this afternoon as the Twins take on the Chicago Cubs.

It's certainly possible that storms could cause delays during the middle and latter part of the game. Fans may want to consider bringing an umbrella with them to the game.

Thunderstorms that fire up will be capable of producing wind gusts in excess of 70 mph, hail to the size of golfballs or larger, and several tornadoes.

Thunderstorms that fire this afternoon will shift into more of Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois, and central Missouri later Sunday night. This will bring the threat for nocturnal gusty thunderstorms to Madison, Wisc., Dubuque, Ia., and perhaps St. Louis, Mo. toward Monday morning.

During the day on Monday, the threat will slide eastward in parts of the Midwest, Mississippi Valley and southern Plains.
