Storm-Weary Northeast Dries Out
Dry and tranquil weather will return to the Northeast today, following a powerful storm that pounded the area since the beginning of the weekend. The calm conditions expected to persist in the region through the end of the week will allow the hard-hit region to dry out and clean up.
Rainfall totals from the massive storm neared 10 inches in parts of Massachusetts. On Monday alone, 2.11 inches of rain doused Boston, shattering the daily rainfall record of 1.39 inches dating back to 1953.
Rising water threatened to overwhelm the wastewater system in the Boston area, forcing officials to begin a controlled release of millions of gallons of untreated wastewater from the Nut Island treatment plant into Quincy Bay on Monday.
Rivers and streams across the coastal Northeast have also overflowed their banks. Currently, major flooding is occurring on the Passaic River in New Jersey and the Pawtuxuet River in Connecticut, as well as the Assabet, Aberjona and Shawsheen rivers in Massachusetts.
Meanwhile, thousands throughout the region are waiting for power to be restored. Winds howling past 50 mph at times accompanied the rain, downing trees and power lines throughout the area.
PSE&G in New Jersey reported that as of Sunday evening it had restored power to over 380,000 customers, making this the worst storm in the company's history.
Approximately 76,000 homes remain in the dark, most of which are located in Bergen County, New Jersey Power is expected to be restored in these areas by Wednesday or Thursday.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
