Severe Weather Threatens Northern, Central Plains
The danger of severe weather will shift eastward across the northern and central Plains today into Friday.
The first round of violent thunderstorms will target the northern High Plains today.

The thunderstorms will ignite late this afternoon over far eastern Wyoming and neighboring parts of South Dakota and Nebraska. The severe weather will then spread to the central Dakotas and central Nebraska tonight.
The strongest thunderstorms later today will be capable of producing damaging winds, hail and flooding downpours. A couple of tornadoes may also touch down and cause destruction.
The severe weather danger will shift eastward over the northern and central Plains on Friday, stretching from Fargo, N.D., to Kansas City, Mo.
However, Friday's potentially damaging thunderstorms will likely be most numerous from eastern Kansas to northwestern Illinois. This area will also be highly susceptible to flooding from the thunderstorms following today's dousing by Tropical Rainstorm Hermine.
The culprit behind the severe weather danger is a cold front emerging from the Rockies. In the wake of that front, a brief shot of noticeably cooler air will filter over the northern High Plains on Friday.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
