'Roofing' Around in the Snow

A home is one of the greatest investments a person makes, and protecting it from winter damages is not always easy. Homeowners need to be aware of the danger snow accumulation poses to their roofs.

Collapsing roofs are a serious issue that can cause severe injury or death. As winter continues to bring piles of snow and ice, people are urged to clean their roofs.

The Northeast has witnessed dozens of roof collapses under the pressure of this year's winter snow, explains Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist.

Another consequence of the uncleared snow is ice damming. "Melting snow drains towards the outside of the roof's eve. When the water drainage reaches the eve it is beyond the influence of the building's temperatures. It will then freeze, creating an ice dam blocking additional melting snow. When water stops draining, it can often leak into the home," said Steve Wistar, AccuWeather Sr. Forensic Meteorologist.

Safety First

Snow removal is an already strenuous activity. Climbing on to an icy, snow-covered roof is dangerous. Consider if you are healthy enough for the physical demands. Decide if the job is too dangerous and should be left to a professional.

Prior to Snow Removal

First, determine the tools needed for snow removal. Some common tools include snow shovel, a ladder, push broom and rock salt.

Designate a location for snow once it is removed. It is important to remember that snow is much harder to move once it hits the ground.

Don't waste time and energy by shoveling twice the amount of work. It is best to dump snow in locations away from a driveway, electrical lines and propane tanks.

Proper Attire

Appropriate clothing will protect from the harsh cold and is necessary for safety. Warm clothing that provides a wide range of motion is best.

Boots that are slip resistant or spiked can help avoid slips. A thick pair of insulated gloves will keep hands warm and protect from injury.

Roof Rake

A unique, expandable rake is used to pull excess snow off a roof. The rake allows for the user to remain on the ground.

Many have a blade or cutter attached to the head of the rake. Remove the snow in sections for the best results.

The rakes vary in design and price. Roof rakes can be purchased at most hardware stores.

Leave a Layer

Leaving a thin layer of snow on the roof can provide some protection from removal tools. Metal tools can cause damage by getting caught on shingles.

Icicles Hanging Around

Lastly, once the roof is cleared, icicles can be left hanging around. Icicles can easily fall and injure or harm someone or something. Structural damages can also be seen when icicles have grown in weight.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
