Several records were broken throughout the West on Sunday. The unusually warm weather will persist in the Southwest today.

As Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski predicted early in the weekend, Sunday's temperatures surged 10 to 15 degrees above typical mid-December highs across Southern California, southern Nevada and Arizona.

On Sunday, new high temperature records were set or tied in several Western cities and towns, including Phoenix and Yuma, Ariz., San Gabriel, Long Beach and Burbank, Calif., Winnemucca, Nev., Klamath Falls, Ore., and Stanley and Burley, Idaho.

A high temperature of 83 degrees in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday broke the record of 82 degrees from 1952.

The warm air that has engulfed the Southwest will stick around today, sending thermometers soaring to record-challenging levels once again. However, cold air will begin edging southward towards the region on Tuesday, allowing chillier temperatures to reign for the second half of the week.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
