Daytona 500 Postponed Until Monday; Rain Still in Forecast

By By Kristina Pydynowski, Senior Meteorologist
    March 01, 2012, 1:41:13 AM EST

Rain on Sunday forced NASCAR officials to postpone the Daytona 500 until Monday, but the weather is not expected to be any better.

The postponement, the first in the history of the race according to ESPN, came after Daytona Beach remained the target of showers from the Gulf of Mexico throughout Sunday.

AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski first warned of the possibility of showers reaching Daytona Beach at the time of the race late last week.

The race is now scheduled to start at noon EST today.

However, additional showers streaming eastward across Florida may force another delay. Thunderstorms will also enter into the picture.

A shower or two will linger into tonight before dry weather finally returns to Daytona Beach on Tuesday.
