Rain Approaches World Cup Monday
Jun 13, 2010; 7:02 AM ET
Inclement approaches the World Cup for the first time Monday as a system moving into South Africa could bring rain and gusty winds to the coast.
However, before the system moves in, an area of high pressure will keep pleasant weather in place through this evening.
Sunday's matches
Serbia vs. Ghana

Capital city Pretoria hosted its first match just before sunset. Conditions were sunny with a temperature around 60 F (15 C).
Germany vs. Australia
Sunday's evening match in Durban will be clear and pleasant, with a comfortable 66 degrees forecast at the 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. EDT) start time.
Monday's matches
Netherlands vs. Denmark
The Group E rivals play their opening match in Johannesburg's Soccer City at 1:30 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. EDT). Temperature at game time will be a sunny 68 degrees F (20 C).
Japan vs. Cameroon
The other Group E match-up takes place at Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein before sunset at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. EDT). Game time will have a partly cloudy sky and a kickoff temperature of 60 F (16 C).
Italy vs. Paraguay
As an area of low pressure approaches South Africa, the evening game at coastal Cape Town Stadium will see less-than-favorable playing conditions. The 8:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. EDT) match will be stormy and chilly, with showers and 40 mph gusts of wind expected. Game time temperature will be 42 degrees F (5 C).

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
