Many families and college students are currently spending their Spring Break in Florida, hoping to enjoy the state's typical warmth. The past couple of days have been cool in terms of Florida standards, but improvement is on the way.

A storm made for a cool and in some cases a wet Wednesday across Florida. Temperatures were held to the 50s across northern Florida and the 60s generally elsewhere.

West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Naples each set or tied a record for the day's coolest high temperature.

Wednesday's high in Naples was only 64°. That is well below the city's typical high of 81°. Philadelphia actually had a warmer high of 66°.

Temperatures today will warm a few degrees above Wednesday's highs across Florida. Some showers, however, will keep the state damp.

Noticeable improvement will come on Friday as high pressure builds overhead. Sunshine will dominate, allowing temperatures to warm into the 70s almost statewide.

Further warming will take place on Saturday, when Naples will approach the 80-degree mark. Dry weather will remain in control of the state.

It will not be until Sunday and Sunday night when thunderstorms will rattle Florida. A fresh shot of cool air will follow for early next week.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
