The West will be the first to enjoy a surge of warmer air that is destined to spread over much of the nation this week.

A building ridge of high pressure will cause Monday's temperatures to pleasantly warm above Sunday's highs from Montana and Washington to California.

Boise, Idaho, will enjoy highs in the 60s on Monday. Temperatures will rise into the mid-50s in Salt Lake City, which saw snow accumulate as recently as Saturday afternoon.

An offshore flow of air will bring additional warming to Southern California. Temperatures will get pushed into the lower 80s across the Los Angeles Basin.

A high of 83° is expected in Downtown Los Angeles on Monday. That will challenge the day's record high of 85° from 1978.

Southern California will experience similar warmth on Tuesday as temperatures rise further throughout the Rockies.

A new storm will usher cooler air back into the Northwest and Rockies Wednesday into Thursday.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
