It's been an active week in the tropics with Hurricane Karl bashing southern Mexico, Hurricane Igor heading toward Bermuda and Julia spinning over the central Atlantic.

It appears the action may continue into next week with prospects for Lisa to soon form near the Cape Verde Islands.

Computer models are also hinting at the potential for more tropical development in the western Caribbean toward the end of the month.

First looking at the eastern Atlantic, it's an area of low pressure just west of the Cape Verde Islands that could develop into Tropical Storm Lisa within the next few days.

This feature's current location over warm waters and in an area of weak wind shear (strong winds high in the atmosphere) supports tropical development. However, the system will have to overcome dry air to its north in order for this to occur.

Closer to home for people in the United States, there is some concern for tropical development in the western Caribbean toward the end of the month.

Computer models have been showing this potential late next weekend or early the following week.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
