A view of the tropics Saturday and features of concern

More tropical systems are already brewing in the wake of Earl across the Atlantic basin and could affect land within the next few days.

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reports that Tropical Rainstorm Gaston is expected to redevelop into a tropical depression or storm this long holiday weekend and could impact the hard-hit Leeward Islands late Monday into Tuesday. It was not even a week ago that Earl lashed these islands with battering wind, waves and torrential rain.

Computer models vary greatly in where Gaston will track thereafter. Some bring it west-northwestward across Puerto Rico and Hispaniola next week and eventually even curve it northward into Florida next weekend. Meanwhile, other models keep it on a more westward track over the Caribbean, slamming it into Central America.

Fiona is no longer an area of concern. The system weakened into a tropical rainstorm before hitting Bermuda on Friday night and is not expected to redevelop.

Another feature of interest is a large area of showers and thunderstorms over the Bay of Campeche. The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center reports that this feature could quickly organize into a tropical system this weekend and move onshore over eastern Mexico by early next week.

Regardless of whether this feature becomes a tropical system, it is likely to spread showers and thunderstorms into Deep South Texas early next week. Flash flooding could become a threat.

Elsewhere across the Atlantic basin, an area of low pressure near the Cape Verde Islands is also being monitored for potential tropical development over the next few days.

Behind that, several more disturbances moving off the west coast of Africa late this weekend into early next week could keep the tropics alive through at least the middle of September.

AccuWeather.com Chief Hurricane Expert Joe Bastardi is predicting this year's hurricane season to remain active well through the end of November and possibly even into December.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
