A major storm will set up this weekend near Italy, bringing even more snow to winter-weary southern and southeastern Europe.

The area has already received disruptive, even immobilizing, bouts of snow since the start of last week as a result of a massive cold wave spilling out of eastern Europe.

The storm is already forming off the coast of western Italy and will cross the country through Saturday before moving southward into the Mediterranean Sea.

About a foot of snow is possible over the hilly areas of central Italy, while a couple inches of snow accumulation could fall through Friday night in Rome, a city not prone to accumulating snow.

Even the flatter terrain in northeastern Italy, including the city of Bologna, could pick up about 6 inches of snow, according to Accuweather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Bernie Rayno.

According to Accuweather.com meteorologist Eric Wanenchak, higher elevations of the Balkan Peninsula could get a couple feet of snow accumulation, including portions of Bulgaria, Romania and northern Greece.

Coastal locations of the peninsula could pick up several inches of accumulating snow, as well.

Wanenchak notes that this system could be especially devastating to the region, as the recent cold has greatly inhibited snowmelt, leading to "snow on top of snow."

As a result, many residents in more remote locations may become isolated and trapped.

Heavy rain will soak areas near sea level southward and eastward from the storm's center.

Hail is much more common during the months of May and June compared to July and August. The main reason is the fact that the freezing level is usually higher during July and August as pockets of cold air in the upper atmosphere are less common as the jet stream weakens and retreats farther north.
