Light snow and a wintry mix is streaking across the South this weekend, posing travel hazards from eastern North Carolina, Virginia and Delaware to southeastern New Jersey.

The wintry weather is falling on the northern edge of a storm pushing across Florida and into the western Atlantic. This is the same storm that will target New England with heavy snow early during the upcoming week.

Through early Sunday, light snow will spread through northeastern North Carolina, southeastern Virginia, southeastern Maryland, southern Delaware and southeastern New Jersey.

Accumulations will generally be light, on the order of 1-3 inches; however, with falling temperatures, roads will be quite slippery and dangerous. Norfolk, Va., will be in this zone.

Raleigh, N.C., Richmond, Va., Salisbury, Md., and Atlantic City, N.J., are expected to get a coating to an inch or two of snow.

Elevated roadways, bridges and overpasses will be extremely slick and hazardous as well as any untreated roadways. Motorists are urged to use caution and slow down in this zone.

The snow will stay south and east of Washington, D.C., Dover, Del., and Philadelphia, Pa.

Early Saturday morning, the snow hit Memphis, dropping half an inch over the downtown area and reducing the visibility to half a mile.

Sleet and snow also fell as far south as Charlotte, N.C., during the day on Saturday.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
