Julia Becomes Fifth Hurricane of the Season
A snapshot of the tropics Tuesday shows Hurricane Julia churning to the east of monster Hurricane Igor.
Julia became the fifth hurricane of the season early Tuesday morning as it strengthened to the west of the Cape Verde Islands. The system first formed as a tropical storm over the weekend.
Unlike its monster neighbor Hurricane Igor, Julia will pose no threat to land this week as it continues on a northwestward path across the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
With wind shear (strong winds high up in the atmosphere) to remain relatively weak, Julia should maintain Category 1 hurricane strength much of the week. However, minor fluctuations in strength can occur.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. This Day In Weather History
New Hampshire (1814)
A tornado crossed Merrimac, Litchfield, Londonderry and North Chester. The same storm produced hailstones that had an 11-inch circumference and weighed 1/2 pound.
Northeast (1989)
More rain in an already wet month. Monthly totals topped 11 inches at New York City, 9 inches at Bridgeport, Conn., and 8 inches at Baltimore (all three totals set records for May).
