Houston to Atlanta at Risk for Severe Storm Outbreak
This video has the latest breaking weather across the U.S., including the potential for severe storms across the Deep South.
Potentially damaging thunderstorms with torrential rain will strike the Deep South Monday into Tuesday threatening to unleash severe winds and even tornadoes.
Strong thunderstorms will first erupt on Monday as warmth and moisture off the western Gulf of Mexico clash with an oncoming cold front. East Texas, much of Louisiana and southern Arkansas will see the first of these strong thunderstorms during the day.
At night, powerful thunderstorms will sweep eastward ahead of the cold front rattling areas from southern and eastern Louisiana and Mississippi to Alabama and southern Tennessee.
New Orleans, Jackson, Miss., and Mobile and Montgomery, Ala., will be at risk of damaging winds. Houston as well as Little Rock and Memphis could also get socked by a damaging storm.
In the most extreme outcomes, a tornado could set down in these areas.
On Tuesday, potentially severe thunderstorms will shift east to invade Georgia, including Atlanta, along with northwestern Florida and northwestern South Carolina.
The situation will need to be watched carefully, as some of the requisites for an outbreak of tornadoes are forecast.
Meanwhile, coverage of heavy rain will reach beyond the severe threat area and will reach as far north as Indiana and eastern Illinois by early Tuesday. Here, flooding could take place.
The same storm system expected to ignite severe weather across the Deep South will spread treacherous snow and ice across the northern Plains and the Upper Midwest.

New Hampshire (1814)
A tornado crossed Merrimac, Litchfield, Londonderry and North Chester. The same storm produced hailstones that had an 11-inch circumference and weighed 1/2 pound.
Northeast (1989)
More rain in an already wet month. Monthly totals topped 11 inches at New York City, 9 inches at Bridgeport, Conn., and 8 inches at Baltimore (all three totals set records for May).
