An area of low pressure in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico became better organized late Sunday into Tropical Depression 10. The depression will not only be monitored for further development, but also for its potential to trigger flooding along the Mexican coastline and in Texas.

The depression is located about 305 miles east-southeast of Tampico, Mexico, and it should creep northwestward through the western Gulf of Mexico into Monday.

The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is concerned that the warm waters of the Gulf should allow the depression to strengthen into a tropical storm by later Monday. The next name on the 2010 Atlantic Basin list is Hermine.

The main hinderance to further development is its close proximity to the Mexican coastline. The interaction with land may prevent it from strengthening into a strong tropical storm.

Regardless of further development, there is significant concern that the depression could trigger flash flooding along the eastern Mexican coastline into Monday.

Bands of drenching rain have and will continue to stream over the eastern Mexican coast through Monday.

Enough rain will pour down that flash flooding may ensue. The danger of mudslides being triggered also exists since the mountains just west of the coastline will enhance the rainfall.

As the low pushes northwestward, thunderstorms will become more numerous over South Texas on Labor Day. Worse than ruining outdoor holiday festivities, a localized number of the thunderstorms will drop flooding downpours.

The danger of flooding downpours will increase across South Texas Monday night into Tuesday as the low approaches. Tuesday is also when the shower and thunderstorm activity will increase over central and East Texas.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
