Monday's tornado outbreak in the central and southern Plains killed at least seven people and injured nearly 60 others in Kansas and Oklahoma.

There were 37 sightings of tornadoes across western and central Kansas and Oklahoma, including in Wichita and Topeka, Kan., and Oklahoma City, Okla.

Rescuers are working to clear away debris and power lines in a 30-square-mile area around Oklahoma City to search for any survivors.

Several tornadoes tore through Oklahoma City around rush-hour.

More than 65,000 homes and businesses in Oklahoma were left without power after strong winds and tornadoes blew through the area yesterday.

Cherokee, Okla., had a report of hail measuring 4.25 inches on Monday afternoon, shattering numerous windows in buildings. There was also a wind gust of 100 mph reported south of Wichita, Kan.

A tornado destroyed a truck stop just east of the city along I-40, and forced officials to close the highway in both directions, leaving traffic at a standstill for miles. More than 40 homes were destroyed and at least 108 were damaged.

Interstate 35 was also closed for a time on the Oklahoma-Kansas border due to overturned trucks that blocked the roadway.

After a tornado moved through Grant County in Oklahoma, at least one man sustained some minor injuries, one home was destroyed and two more suffered damage, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Remember, while your vehicle is safe on high ground during a common thunderstorm, it is one of the worst places to be during a tornado and you may not know you are in the path of one.

Seek shelter immediately if a tornado siren sounds or a tornado warning is issued for the area you reside at or are traveling through.

Another round of severe storms will unfold over the Plains beginning Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Monday marked the two-year anniversary of a deadly tornado outbreak that struck similar areas threatened by today's storms as well as portions of the Deep South. The storms spawned many strong and devastating tornadoes with a total of 85 tornado reports for the day. Southwestern Missouri was hit the hardest by destructive tornadoes that leveled many buildings and killed 10 people.
