After severe weather this past weekend produced nearly 400 reports of damaging winds, destructive hail and tornadoes, another round of severe weather will continue to rattle the Gulf Coast through Wednesday.

A new storm system ejecting onto the Plains states is dragging a cold front through the lower Mississippi River Valley tonight. Ahead of this front, warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will meet up with much colder air streaming in from the north.

This clash of the air masses has set the stage for another outbreak of severe weather to erupt over the lower Mississippi Valley and central Gulf Coast. Another zone of violent thunderstorms is targeting South Texas.

Wednesday, the danger of violent thunderstorms will shift to far southern Georgia and the northern Florida Peninsula. This includes Jacksonville and Tallahassee.

The strongest thunderstorms through Wednesday will be capable of unleashing not only damaging winds, but also hail that could crack windshields and dent vehicles.

A few tornadoes could touch down and cause greater destruction.

Downpours accompanying the thunderstorms through Wednesday may lead to localized flooding problems in poor drainage and urban areas, as well as along small streams.

The downpours will create hazards for motorists by dramatically reducing visibility and causing water to pond on highways, which heightens the risk of vehicles hydroplaning.

The departure of Wednesday's severe weather will not end the recent onslaught of violent thunderstorm events in the Southeast, which began this past weekend.

Yet another round of severe weather is set to bear down on southern Georgia and Florida Thursday.

People need to pay close attention to the UV index during this time of year. On a sunny day late in the spring and into the summer, the UV is usually at least an 8, which is very high. Readings over 11 are considered extreme values in which only 10 minutes of full exposure to the sun will produce a sunburn.
