A Cool Weekend at Pocono, Showers May Come Calling

Despite record-challenging heat in the East this summer, the weather for racing at Pocono this weekend will be cool. Rain could come calling for Sprint Cup racing on Sunday.

While there is chance of showers at the Long Pond, Pa., 2.5-mile triangle on Sunday, much of the balance of the weekend will be rain-free and just fine for tailgating and racing in the Poconos.

A strong cool front was pushed through the Poconos Thursday morning with localized showers and thunderstorms.

Following the front, look for a couple of days of sunshine Friday and Saturday with low humidity. Both mornings will start off in the upper 40s to low 50s, but they should rebound to the 70s in the afternoon.

A system will cross the Poconos rather slowly Saturday night and Sunday. It now appears this system will have time to grab substantial moisture and could bring more than just a spotty shower or thunderstorm.

There is the risk of several downpours on Sunday, and the chance of several hours of steady rain. If the race is postponed Sunday, Monday appears to be drier, but may carry the continued chance of a shower.

Temperatures Sunday will peak in the lower 70s, but will be in the 60s while its raining. Recall that a torrential downpour was followed by a chilly blast of air during the June race at Long Pond.

Saturday marks the first appearance ever for the Camping World Truck Series race; the Pocono Mountains 125. No rain is in the forecast for Saturday.

So if you are heading to one or more of the races at Pocono, you might want to have a jacket handy for the cool mornings and any showers that come calling on Sunday.

If you like racing, but don't like sitting out in blistering heat, this may be your weekend to attend and get some fresh air. However, if you stick around for the race on Sunday, be ready to get a little wet.

Roush's Plane Crash

Meanwhile, Jack Roush, a NASCAR team owner, was hospitalized after stalling the wings of his privately-owned jet just before landing in Wisconsin.

According to the AP, the crash occurred at 6:15 p.m. CDT Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Wittman Regional Airport. Roush's injuries were not life-threatening.

For Roush, it was his second plane crash. During 2002, Jack landed a privately-owned plane in an Alabama pond in 2002 and was more seriously injured.

According to AccuWeather.com Expert Meteorologist and airplane buff, Henry Margusity, weather did not appear to be a major issue during the incident in Wisconsin Tuesday. The weather was clear and winds were from the south-southwest at 10 to 15 mph with gusts near 20 mph. The winds are typical for the area during the summer season.

The "Dead of Winter," the one-month period when normal temperatures reach their lowest levels, has come to an end for much of the United States. Some people may find it odd that the "Dead of Winter" does not encompass the darkest day of the year (the first day of winter). That is due to a seasonal lag in temperatures. More heat continues to be lost than is gained from the start of winter until this time of year.
