A "curtain of fire" eruption of lava has burst from a rift on the flanks of D.R. Congo's highly active Nyamuragira Volcano.
The volcano is located within the famous Virunga National Park, which is home to the rare, endangered mountain gorilla.
The eruption and lava flow were taking place away from populated areas, and in areas where wildlife should not be harmed, the park's official website said on Tuesday.
The fiery curtains of lava were recorded on Monday night, lighting the night sky from the park headquarters.
Nyamuragira (or Nyamulagira) is Africa's most active volcano, according to the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program website.
Eruptions of Nyamuragira happen "about every years," the park website said. "Eruptions like this one can go on for days, weeks, or even months..."
This broad "shield" volcano erupts liquid basalt lava, which typically yields relatively benign lava flows, rather than catastrophic blasts of ash and rock like Mt. St. Helens.
