All lanes on Interstate 94 east are closed down due to a multi-vehicle crash that left three dead and more than twenty injured near Porter, Ind.
The crash occurred during the late-afternoon hours, southwest of Michigan City, Ind., after a burst of snow hit the area.
"A burst of heavy snow occurred nearby in Michigan City with visibility down to a quarter of a mile," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Edwards said.
Visibility in the region was a quarter of a mile for a few hours today from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. local time, creating treacherous travel conditions for motorists.

According to the Associated Press, the crash involved several semi trucks and multiple cars.
With motorists now stuck on the roadway, the largest concern through the evening will be the dangerous cold in the area.
As of 9 p.m. local time, emergency crews were still working to clear the highway. Michigan City also provided two buses to warm people and transport the injured to the hospital, according to the Associated Press.
"Temperatures are around 10 degrees right now but they will fall below zero, probably as early as 7 or 8 p.m. local time," Edwards said. "Wind chills will be on the order of 20 to 30 below zero."
As temperatures continue to drop, motorists will run the risk of running out of fuel and those without proper clothing attire could be at risk for life-threatening cold injuries such as hypothermia and frostbite.
