Bone-Chilling, Dangerous Cold in the East

Even more bone-chilling cold is gripping the East the start of the week, challenging records and creating dangers for both pets and people alike.
Anyone spending even short amounts of time outdoors will need to wear very warm clothes through the start of the week, dressing in layers and covering as much exposed skin as possible.
Hypothermia and frostbite will be risks that people will face if they spend extended periods of time outdoors without the proper attire.
Pets can also suffer from the cold, and people should bring any outdoor pets inside.
"The cold will kill weak car batteries, freeze household water pipes exposed to drafts, and could eventually lead to an epidemic of broken water mains in some communities, " warned AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski last week.
The jet stream has plunged across the East, allowing the door to the coldest arctic air of the season to open over the weekend.
Even colder air has arrived for the start of the week with the core of the arctic cold settling over southern Quebec, Canada, and a northwesterly flow sending frigid air southward through the eastern half of the United States.
An area of high pressure building over the Northeast early Monday morning has allowed gusty winds from Sunday to diminish across much of the interior. This has allowed frigid air to settle at the surface.
Gusty winds and brutally cold temperatures will make it feel like a painful, bone-chilling cold across New England, however.
In some communities from northern New York to western and northern Maine, temperatures dropped off to 20-35 degrees below zero F early Monday morning. Some of these areas feel as cold as 40 degrees below zero F.
Temperatures across many areas from northern Pennsylvania through New England will have a chance to break record lows.
The temperature in Boston fell below zero early Monday morning. With winds factored in, AccuWeather RealFeel temperatures were near 30 degrees below zero F in the city itself as of 7 a.m. EST Monday.
The low at Central Park in New York City bottomed out at 6 degrees F early Monday morning.
Temperatures in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh also dipped into the single digits.
Lows in the 20s have extended all the way through northern Florida, while lows across portions of central Florida dropped into the 30s.
Highs will only climb into the teens in the major Northeast cities along the I-95 corridor from Boston to New York City and Philadelphia today. Washington, D.C., will have a high in the 20s, while much of the South remains unusually chilly.

This Day In Weather History
New Hampshire (1814)
A tornado crossed Merrimac, Litchfield, Londonderry and North Chester. The same storm produced hailstones that had an 11-inch circumference and weighed 1/2 pound.
Northeast (1989)
More rain in an already wet month. Monthly totals topped 11 inches at New York City, 9 inches at Bridgeport, Conn., and 8 inches at Baltimore (all three totals set records for May).
