Record Southeast Flooding Photos, Maps

Rain is now finally over in Tennessee and Kentucky, but has spread eastward into Georgia and the Carolinas. The 15-inch area causing historical flooding Sunday expanded; here is a closeup map showing cities on top of heavy precipitation amounts:

Huge flood warnings are still in effect for Tennessee and Kentucky. Incredible photos are being uploaded by our Facebook Fans, such as Kathy in Richmond, KY:

And if you look at the river gauges in the Nashville area, seven are over "Major Flood Stage" (the point at which NOAA stops measuring because it's so rare) and many of those are over record stage for the last 100+ years. The most impressive which I saw this morning was the Duck River at Centerville which crested at nearly 45 feet yesterday; the previous record 37.6 in 1948.

About 19 people have perished from the storm and that toll will likely rise; it takes days for rivers to crest and come back down. If you look at the regional precipitation estimates, notice how much of I-40 went under more than 10 inches of rain!
