Photo: Fires Threaten Hollywood Sign
Forest fires threatened the Hollywood Sign and the Los Angeles Zoo yesterday. The fires were extinguished before they reached either structure, but did overtake some local landmarks. The LA Daily News has the details. AccuWeather.com Photo Gallery member wb6ypf, better known as Bill Westphal, offered this photo and comments yesterday:
A wind whipped brush fire swept through the Griffith Park area of Los Angeles this afternoon threatening the L.A. City Zoo and the famous Carousel. High temperatures, extremely low humidity, and moderate winds were a factor. Water dropping helicopters and fixed wing aircraft were called in. This photo show the new Blackhawk Helicopter which can carry 1,000 gallons of water. Fire is still burning and only partially contained.
