Deadly Bolt From The Blue, Lightning Safety Week

June 24, 2007; 3:01 PM

A Miami landscaper was killed by an apparent "bolt from the blue", the Miami Herald reports. These lightning bolts, also called "positive giants" strike out away from the storm and land as far as 20 miles away. The article quotes a similar occurrence in Florida in 1988. I blogged about another bolt from the blue that killed a man on a New Jersey beach in 2001 (news article).

Lightning Safety week begins today. See my blog entry this time last year for lightning safety tips and factoids.

"Bolts From The Blue" are one more reason to go inside when you hear thunder (or are warned ahead of time by a lightning protection service such as AccuWeather.com LightningPlus that lightning is expected).
