Light Snow over a Large Area. La Nina Weakens!

The CPC issued a statement Friday saying the La Nina is weakening and that we are going into a neutral ENSO event and perhaps even an El Nino by next winter. I guess they are catching to what I have been saying about the La Nina since mid-January. Now the issues are what is going to happen this spring and summer, and that is something I will be looking at over the next couple of weeks. The immediate issue will be the prospects for a big snowstorm. I thought by now the pattern will have adjusted itself enough to get some blocking going and storm to develop along the coast. So far that does not seem to be happening and we may have to wait a few more weeks. It really has been an unusual winter in regards to the lack of major East Coast storms. Typically, you get at least one big one, but we have seen none this winter. In fact, we have not seen any major, intense storms with widespread blizzard conditions anywhere in the country. When I say major storms, I mean storms with sub 990 mb lows that just pummel a large area with blizzard conditions.

In the short term, we have the light snow coming across the country that will dwindle as it comes east. Not a big deal for most people.

In the longer term, the next storm coming out of California will produce a band of snow from the Plains into the western Great Lakes Wednesday into Thursday. Parts of Wisconsin into northern Michigan should have 3-6 inches of snow with this next event.
