8:00 a.m. - What is amazing to me is that we are getting a storm of this magnitude with a positive NAO and negative PNA. They happen but are rare. In any case, the ice and snow has started Down South, and the Carolinas into northern Alabama are going to get hit hard with snow and ice into tonight.

The map below shows the snow and ice for the storm. From Virginia north, there will be near-blizzard conditions with heavy snow and drifting snow.

10:00 a.m. - Thunderstorms moving up from Georgia into South Carolina are causing intense precipitation rates in the form of freezing rain, sleet and snow. This is a disaster unfolding across these areas as power outages if they have not started will begin shortly.

10:10 a.m. - Severe storms will move across central Florida late today into tonight. The storms will produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rains and perhaps a tornado.

    3:00 p.m. - Here's the ECMWF snowfall forecast.
