Heavy Storms and MCC's in the Plains

    July 24, 2013; 10:24 AM ET

    1. The pattern is shaping up for MCC's to develop in the Plains. We had one this morning and will probably see a few more over the next week. Sunday night into Monday morning, the low-level jet is screaming up from the south at over 50 knots, and that could result is a big MCC over Kansas. Impacts from that system will be mainly strong winds and heavy rainfall.

    2. Map below shows where heavy thunderstorms will develop Thursday. Some storms will have severe wind gusts, but more will just produce strong winds and heavy rains.

    3. Dorian is going to trek across the northern Caribbean and should be in the Bahamas by Tuesday of next week. The system has to go through a lot of dry air and some cooler water, so it may have problems. I am concerned that the GFS and Euro are not picking up on the system in the long range which means the operational models think the system just weakens and is really not a threat for the East coast. I want to see more runs of the models and see how they handle the system.
