Sep 13, 2010; 12:07 AM ET

This past summer was the 4th warmest on record globally since records began in 1880, according to the Goddard Institute for Space Studies or GISS. Summer is defined as the three months of June, July and August.

According to GISS, the summer of 2010 averaged 0.55 celsius above normal globally. The warmest summer on record occurred in 1998 with +0.67 celsius.

August 2010 was the 7th warmest August on record globally (land & sea combined) as the average temperature was 0.53 celsius above normal. The warmest August on record through GISS record keeping was the +0.63 celsius back in 1998.

The maps below show the color coded August temperature anomalies in degrees celsius.
