Good Snow for Utah Ski Areas Coming

Feb 17, 2012; 1:46 PM ET

A strong storm off the Washington coast this evening will send a cold front southeast over the next couple of days. This front enters northern Utah tomorrow evening and continues south through the state tomorrow night and Sunday morning. With, and behind the front, will be a good dose of winter weather for the long weekend that is likely to drop some very welcome snow on the northern Utah ski resorts. But it is also likely to snow in the valleys after perhaps an initial period of rain.

In the northern Utah mountains, snow is likely to develop early Saturday evening then continue, at times heavy through the day Sunday before gradually ending for most of Monday. Snow accumulations will at least average a foot or two and with some variability likely I could see a bit more than that in spots. Winds will be a problem on Sunday being quite gusty and blowing the snow around. Less wind and even some sunshine is likely on Monday.

In the northern valleys expect a period of rain showers to turn to snow showers Saturday evening and night with occasional snow showers on Sunday. Many places will pick up 1 to 3 inches of snow but isolated downwind from the Great Salt Lake could pick up a lot more than that. It is also likely to snow farther south down the I-15 to Cedar City as this storm heads south late Saturday night and Sunday. So no matter where you are driving expect slippery winter travel weather.

Enjoy the weekend. I know a lot of skiers are really looking forward to the coming snow.
