Georgette to Fuel Heavy Southwest Rain

Sep 21, 2010; 1:10 PM ET

My post yesterday was about upcoming rain in portions of the Southwest Wednesday and Wednesday night. I pointed to an area of showers and thunderstorms south of the Baja as the moisture source for that rain. During the nighttime hours last night, those showers and thunderstorms organized enough to become a weak tropical storm, Georgette. The mid-afternoon satellite shows that this is not a big storm but you can see the center just south of Cabo San Lucas.

Despite not being an impressive tropical storm, there is a lot of moisture well east and northeast of the center. All of this moisture is going to move quickly north and northeast over the next 24 hours as a rather strong upper-level trough moves into California. The combination of the lift this trough will bring with it and all this tropical air moving north will cause an outbreak of showers and thunderstorms from central and eastern Arizona into New Mexico and north into parts of Utah and a good part of Colorado. Locally heavy rain is likely and this could cause life-threatening flash floods in normally dry washes. Most of this will happen from late tonight through tomorrow night then drier air will move in on Thursday.
