An Amazing Photo of the International Space Station and the Moon

Jan 18, 2012; 4:06 PM ET

This photograph was taken Jan. 4 in Houston, Texas,

Obviously, the large object is the moon. The small object is the International Space Station, or ISS which is an internationally developed research facility in low Earth orbit kept there by a consortium of governmental and inter-governmental space agencies.

Low Earth orbit is generally defined as an orbit within the locus extending from the Earth's surface up to an altitude of 2,000 km. The objective of the ISS, as defined by NASA is to develop and test technologies for exploration spacecraft systems and to develop techniques to maintain crew health and performance on missions beyond low Earth orbit.

A simply amazing photograph (thanks to NASA)
