Summer Basically Over for Western Canada

Aug 23, 2010; 7:08 PM ET

Based on short-range and long-range computer models, it appears that we can basically put a fork in summer 2010 for much of western Canada. While there will be a brief surge of very warm air into the southern Prairies late this week, it will be short-lived, as the second in a series of unseasonably cool air surges quickly arrives over the weekend.

Long-range models continue to show a mean trof (pocket of cold air aloft) across western Canada over the next 10-15 days, and that already takes us close to the second week of September, and I do not see any significant change after that as well.

On the flip side, after a period of cool weather, I see a significant, long-lasting period of abnormal warmth across eastern Canada beginning this weekend and continuing through next week. It could also get very dry, especially from Ottawa and Montreal on south. Summer is not even close to done in eastern Canada.

Here are my highlights for the rest of this week.

I will be out of the office the rest of this week.
