FOX 13 Tampa Headlines

Gargantuan gator spotted at Palmetto golf course has new name

The massive alligator and longtime resident of the Buffalo Creek Golf Course in Palmetto was spotted by golfers while out for Monday night stroll.

Gerald Jean was teeing off on the 7th hole when he saw the gator come out of the pond on the ninth hole. The gator, nicknamed "Chubbs," walked across the cart path a few feet and plopped down to take a rest. "That's a big boy," Jean is heard saying on video.

The retired Tampa police officer said he was single playing late in the afternoon. "There was another golfer with his young daughter that let me play through, as he was also taking photos," Jean told FOX 13.

Video of the gator went viral last month when golfers caught him on camera and couldn't believe his sheer enormity.

The manager at the golf course, Ken Powell, confirmed the gargantuan gator is, indeed, real, and he's doing quite well living at the golf course. In fact, Powell shot some new video of "Chubbs" last Friday in his favorite spot, doing what he does best: walking across the cart path and plopping down on the ground for a rest.

The gator's nickname, by the way, was chosen as part of a Facebook contest earlier this month.
