Ex-priest arrested in Arizona for murder of Texas beauty queen

A former Catholic priest was arrested in Arizona for a murder dating back to the 1960's in Texas.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says 83-year-old John Feit has been arrested for the murder of 25-year-old beauty queen Irene Garza, whose body was found in a Texas canal.

Feit was the last person to see her alive when she gave a confession at his church the night she disappeared. Feit left the priesthood and has been living in the valley since the 1970's.

The case was reopened in 2002, but the district attorney at the time concluded that there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute Feit.

Now, after more than a year of investigating the case, the McAllen Police Department, Texas Rangers and the Hidalgo County District Attorney decided to present the case to a grand jury last week, which led to Feit's indictment.

Reports out of Texas also say that Feit was arrested for attacking another woman at a church weeks before Garza's murder. Feit pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor aggravated assault charge and he paid a fine.

Feit has been booked into Fourth Avenue Jail and he is awaiting extradition back to McAllen, Texas.
