Tires dropped off in Hillsborough County to stop spread of Zika virus

With three confirmed cases of the Zika virus in Hillsborough County, officials are taking every precaution to keep that number from getting any higher.

One way is by getting rid of any stagnant water that can attract disease carrying mosquitoes.

On Saturday, the county held a free tire disposal event. Each vehicle was allowed to drop off up to 10 tires.

Although people who live in Hillsborough County can dispose of the tires year round at collection centers, it's crucial to toss them the right way.

"They have been proven to be potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes due to the fact that they hold stagnant water so the goal is to get them off the streets, get them off the properties and get them disposed of properly," said Jon-Paul Lavanderira with the Resource Management Rapid Response Team

Other ways to prevent mosquito bites are to empty birdbaths, pet water bowls, and plastic swimming pools.
