One person is dead after a deadly three-car accident on Highway 12 near Long Lake, Minn. early Saturday morning, one of the most dangerous roads in the state.
A Honda Civic and a Ford Fusion were both traveling eastbound on Highway 12 near Old Crystal Bay Road when the Ford Fusion rear ended the Honda, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The Ford spun out into the westbound lane of the highway, where it was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the Ford was airlifted to the hospital, where he later died. The two other drivers were not injured.
That stretch of Highway 12 is one of the most dangerous roadways in Minnesota. There have been 811 crashes on the two-lane highway in the past five years, a number of them fatal.
"It's a high volume roadway and it's an older roadway," Minnesota State Patrol spokesperson Lt. Tiffani Nielson said.
State lawmakers are pushing for a bill to get $15 million to fund safety improvements on Highway 12. The Highway 12 Safety Coalition is also working to address the dangers on the highway that runs through Hennepin and Wright counties.
