A Chamberlain High School student has died after officials say she was struck by a car near the school Tuesday morning.
Tampa police have since identified the student as 17-year-old Alexis Miranda.
According to their reports, Miranda was crossing Busch Boulevard, about two blocks west of North Boulevard, around 7:15 a.m. when she was hit in the center turn lane.
Investigators say it's possible the driver who struck her was attempting to pass other cars in the lane at the time, and may have been speeding.
Officials have not yet confirmed that to be the case, and are still investigating the crash site.
"It's sad for everyone involved. Clearly [Miranda's] family is distraught. The driver is distraught," said Tampa Police Spokesperson Andrea Davis. "We just want to remind people: Use crosswalks. Drive Safely. We don't want tragedies like this to continue to happen."
According to a Hillsborough County Schools spokesperson, Miranda was a "nontraditional student" whose schedule consisted of half-day classes as she worked to attain her GED.
They added that grief counselors would be on hand for any students in need of counseling over her death.
Commuters were still being to encouraged to avoid that section of Busch Boulevard as the morning investigation continued.
Those in the area were advised to use Waters or Linebaugh Avenues as alternates.
FOX 13 will continue with updates on this developing story.
