Highway hero and Minnesota trooper reunited, honored

The Minnesota State Patrol has located the Good Samaritan who helped a trooper rescue a semi driver from his burning truck Monday afternoon on a highway in Windom, Minn. The State Patrol's Facebook post seeking the identity of the hero had more than 4,300 shares.

"Heroic actions deserve recognition," the State Patrol said in its post. And Paul Langseth of Worthington, Minn. received that recognition at a Friday morning press conference at the State Patrol's Mankato headquarters.

"It needed to be done. I'd like to think anyone else would have done the same," said Langseth. "This is a good story. There are people out there like me who are willing and able to help."

Sgt. Ron Richards was holding traffic for a funeral procession on Highway 60 at 400th Avenue in Windom, Minn. when a semi-truck driver failed to stop for traffic and rear-ended another stopped semi. With the striking semi in flames, the trooper and Langseth ran to the burning truck and pulled the driver to safety.

"Paul was ready to take action, didn't hesitate," Sgt. Richards said. "Paul was instrumental. I could not have done it without him."

Thanks to the actions of Paul Langseth and Sgt. Richards, the truck driver is recovering from significant, but non-life threatening injuries.
