President Obama was in Nevada today for the 20th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit. Mr. Obama told a crowd of about 9,000 people at Harvey's in Stateline, that it was the first time he had ever visited the lake. Obama said, "Places like Lake Tahoe are important because they nurture and restore the soul. It has been a sacred place for the Washoe Tribe for thousands of years and should be held sacred by all Americans. Today in Tahoe, we're taking 3 more significant steps to boost conservation and climate action: First, we're supporting conservation projects across Nevada to restore watersheds, stop invasive species and further reduce the risks posed by hazardous fuels and wildfires. Number, two, we're incentivizing private capital to come off the sidelines and contribute to conservation, because government can't do it alone. Number three, in partnership with California we're going to reverse the deterioration of the salt and sea before it's too late...and that's going to help a lot of folks across the West."
The president says he will not have as nice a form of transportation, but he intends to return to Tahoe as a private citizen when he leaves office after this year. He says he'll have to drive instead of ride in Marine One, the presidential helicopter that he boarded after the summit to fly back to Reno-Tahoe International Airport before he continues on to Hawaii.
